Check back each Monday for a short devotional to help you start the week off well.
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. (Romans 8:26-27)
A man saw his neighbor at a store and asked her how her husband is doing. She replied, ”He went to heaven last month.” “That’s too bad,” the man responded, only to think that did not sound right. “I mean that’s good.” Again thinking that this sounded wrong, he finally blurted out, “What I meant to say is that I am surprised.”
Like that gentleman, sometimes each of us has those moments where do not know the correct thing to say, especially in prayer, and we need help.
The Apostle Paul reminds us that when we have trouble finding the right things to pray, the Holy Spirit knows our hearts and helps us pray in ways that bypass our understanding. The word ‘saints’ here means other born again Christians. It is okay to confess to the Lord that we have no idea what to pray in certain situations, and that we need his help.
What are some things that could make us weak in our faith?
When was the last time you allowed the Holy Spirit to pray through you?
Heavenly Father, while words may fail me at times I know you never do. You know my heart. Show me what I should be praying for, and may your Spirit direct my prayers. Amen.
