Military service is the ultimate form of giving oneself to others. The bonds formed through combat and other military experiences create a strongly interconnected community. Yet selfless service comes with a price. Trauma and loss are an occupational reality, and their impact on your mind and heart is unavoidable.
Trauma and loss are an occupational reality
Here at the Armed Services Ministry we understand what it means to walk a mile in your shoes. While there is no easy solution to healing, we’ll share stories, teaching, and scriptures to show you that it is possible. Learn how God understands and how God can heal. Join us as we reflect on why we suffer, what causes suffering, and God’s love during times of suffering. Find the peace that comes from knowing you are Never Alone.
At ASM, we created the Never Alone series to walk beside you and see you through the grief and suffering you may have experienced—because we’ve been there.
Why We Suffer
Military personnel have a unique perspective on suffering. Healing also requires a unique approach to confronting that suffering. The stories of struggle shared by veterans or those current serving provide powerful tools for understanding our pain and potential healing paths.
Our program Never Alone takes a look at six veterans who have been where you are now and have overcome their suffering through life-changing engagement with the Scriptures. Check out some of their stories in Module 1.
Where Is God In Our Suffering?
Turning to the Bible can help us shape our understanding of God and his presence in our lives. But sometimes, the Bible can be misconstrued and what may seem like well-intentioned, biblical advice can actually lead us down the wrong thought path. Whether there was a bad experience with church, or intense family dynamics growing up, trusting God can be a challenge.
Fortunately, God’s love for us is unconditional and we can hold fast to the truths that the Bible has to offer us. Check out the video from Part 2 of Module 1 that helps us discover the truth about God’s character.
So why is there all this evil in the world and will suffering ever end? When God created the world, He said it was good (Genesis chapter 1). We often wonder why God allows suffering without considering the cause. When sin entered the world, it distorted all that was good and it became evil. In this first Module we take a look at some of the sources of suffering in the world including Satan, our damaged Creation, and personal choice.
How Do We Remember God's Love?
So, how can we remember God’s love in times of suffering? The Bible says God will never leave us or forsake us. He is always there:
“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 31:8 (ESV)
Even when we are in the midst of suffering, remember that God is present to help us in our situation. Consider how God has helped us in the past with similar or even completely different circumstances. Read examples of how God rescued His people from their suffering in the Bible, and find comfort and peace from those accounts.
Finally, learn about God’s truth by reading His word. As we follow Jesus and study the Bible, we learn the truth about God and His love for us, freeing us from Satan’s lies:
“…and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” John 8:32 (ESV)
