Check back each Monday for a short devotional to help you start the week off well.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. (3 John 1:4)
This week we think about Mother’s Day. While this verse was written by the Apostle John about members of his church, it certainly applies equally well to any Christian mother.
Each of us was raised by someone who fulfilled the mother role in our lives. According to the Word of God, mothers play a vital role in God’s creation. Two of my historical heroes agreed on this. Abraham Lincoln said, “All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” Similarly, as Booker T. Washington noted, “If I have done anything in life worth attention, I feel sure that I inherited the disposition from my mother.”
At the core of a mother’s love is the hope that her children will grow to live meaningful and productive lives. The core of a Christian mother’s love is that her children will also have meaningful and productive lives that are rooted in a deep and abiding personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
In the verse for today, what does the Apostle John say is the source of his great joy?
Every day, whether in the news or on social media we hear folks trying to tell us what their brand of truth is. We instead need to listen to God who is the author of truth, and then obey His commands.
What does the Apostle John mean when he refers to walking in the truth? Are you walking in the truth today? Are you living in a way that would make your mother proud? When was the last time you thanked your mother for her love and sacrifice, and for her influence in your coming to know Christ?
Almighty God, thank you for my mother and her influence in my life. Help me to always walk in your truth with childlike trust and faith. Amen.
