Helping Military Parents Guide Their Children to Jesus

Parenting is not for the faint of heart and being a military parent adds layers of complexity that can make it even more challenging. We know that it can be difficult to figure out how to build family life around Jesus and apply God’s Word as your children walk through different stages in life and military seasons. The Hero Squad Program is uniquely designed for military families. We holistically support families by providing customized tools to help your kids engage with Jesus while providing you with encouragement and community along the way.

Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.  – Proverbs 22:6

Military families are frequently uprooted from their support systems and often lack continuous discipleship themselves. The frequent moves and transitions caused by PCS and deployments can create irregular spiritual guidance for children which can result in a sense of displacement.   If left undefined, this displacement can lead to loneliness, anxiety, distrust, and a lack of purpose, identity, and safety.

However, when kids and families are encouraged and nurtured in these seasons through God’s word, it can lead to a deep connection with scripture and God’s story, providing a strong sense of purpose and identity. By offering discipleship tools tailored to military kids, we aim to provide them with the resources they need to develop a strong foundation in their faith, even in the midst of the challenges they face. Military kids can relate to both the God who gives and the God who takes away, and we believe that by fostering their spiritual growth, we can help them navigate the unique experiences of military life with a greater sense of purpose and resilience.

A Foundation of Support Built on Jesus

Hero Squad’s fun and engaging materials bring the Bible to life with a mixture of both mailed and digital resources.

Welcome Boxes:

Each enrolled family receives a Welcome Box containing age appropriate Bibles for each child and one for caretakers. They will also receive devotionals specific to each child’s age and gender, a Bible activity, as well as a few gifts for the whole family. We tailor these gifts to encourage families and strengthen your walk with Christ.

Quarterly Devotionals & Printed Seasonal Activities:

Every quarter, families will receive age and gender-specific weekly devotionals for each child delivered straight to their doorstep. Families will also receive printed seasonal Bible activities designed to engage families in the Word, build unity, and build fun memories together. Devotionals are written by a military spouse and contextualized for the following age groups:

  • Ages 3-7: Eagle Squad – Content that’s easy to absorb, understand and remember to ground kids in spiritual truth and begin to see the Bible as one big story about Jesus.
  • Ages 8-12: Junior Varsity – A constant in the midst of change, JV materials help kids understand and apply scripture to their lives, how to pray, and ways to get to know Jesus.
  • Ages 13+: Varsity – Navigating the teen years can be an emotional minefield for all kids—our resources help demonstrate what God’s Word has to say about these critical battles.

Ongoing Digital Support:

Parents and caregivers are also sent encouraging weekly devotional emails called “Checkpoint,” which provides rich content written by a Military spouse along with prompts and conversation starters for children to encourage ongoing, open and Bible-based discussions as a family.  Weekly memory verse activities are provided for download via our Digital Resource Library, where families on the go can also access digital copies of the children’s devotionals and family activities.  We provide continuous opportunities to connect to other military families and our ministry through social media, blogs, and podcasts. We want parents to lean into a supportive network that cares and understands that the God of the Bible is the ultimate answer to the challenges each Military family faces.

His Story, A Testimony

At Armed Services Ministry, our team LOVES to hear how you and your family were impacted by our resources, but more importantly by God’s word. Check out this story below from a military mom that wanted to share how Hero Squad encouraged her family.

“I wanted to both thank you for your ministry and encourage you in your efforts to be effective in His kingdom. We have 6 children 1 years old up to 11.

My oldest child hasn’t been as interested in God’s word as some of my others. The Bible you sent for him was instrumental in intriguing his curiosity and interest in learning about God. He loved the explanation boxes for words that were maybe foreign to our culture (like what is an “ephod”). I never realized that a lot of his hang ups were reading so many words he didn’t understand. But having a Bible that explained so much in little boxes to the side, or pictures has changed it completely for him.

As a mom this means more to me than anything. When I leave this world, not a lot is going to matter more to me than knowing the little disciples God gave me, know him, love him, and are equipped to follow him on the narrow hard road. Thank you for being a part of equipping them, and being so instrumental in making reading God’s word easy for my son. Truly, this has brought so much joy and relief. Praying for your ministry and just want you to know you are being effective! You are changing kids’ lives and helping them walk with our creator!”
